LEARNING STRATEGY IN SPEAKING OF HIGH ACHIEVEMENT STUDENTS AT STKIP PGRI SUMATERA BARAT
This research was a descriptive research. The instruments which were used consist of speaking test, questionnaire and interview. The population of this research was the second year students of English Department of STKIP PGRI West Sumatera which was consisted of seven classes. The sample was taken by using stratified random sampling which resulted 50 students as the respondents. The sample ware given speaking test which resulted 23 students were high achievement students in speaking and 27 students were low achievement in speaking. The finding of this research showed that the students have used all learning strategies proposed by Oxford, those were Memory, Cognitive, Compensations, Affective and social in speaking, even one student used more than one strategy to learn. The findings also showed that the learning strategy mostly used by the high achievement students was Cognitive strategies meanwhile the Compensation strategy was the learning strategy mostly used by the low achievement students. It can be concluded that the students have to consider about the learning strategies used in improving their speaking skill.
